24 hours in Santorini, Greece

On our trip to Greece this summer, we stayed 24 hours at Oia, Santorini. We decided to stay at a cave/apartment during our trip. We could only stay one night, because it was truly expensive.

We were staying in Athens and we flew to Santorini from the Athens airport. We woke up very early and took a direct flight to Santorini, also known as Thira, in the morning. The flight was only about an hour long, and later we took a bus to our apartment. It was very interesting, because I didn't expect the island to be so big and spaced out. Most of the houses were very far apart from each other, at least that's what I thought.

After half and hour of riding in the bus we approached the part of the island I have seen in pictures so many times. It was near the coast on one corner of the island, and all you could see was white houses with cute balconies. It was a dream come true.

Since we only had a day, we decided to walk around the island and of course take pictures. It was very beautiful, but also very hot. By that time it was already noon and the sun was right above us. It was extremely hot, so it is important to reapply sunscreen to avoid getting sunburn and you can wear a hat.

Around lunch time we decided to try a Greek food called gyros. Gyros is a kind of sandwich made with pita bread. We ordered the vegetarian gyro and it was very delicious. We also had a greek salad, of course!

After lunch we walked around the island for a while and soon return to our cave. We stayed there for a few hours just relaxing out on our balcony in our bathing suits, also admiring the view. The cave was cool, also temperature wise, and we took a nap that is possibly the best nap I have ever taken in my life.

Later in the afternoon, we decided to go and find an ice cream shop. Once again we walked around Oia and bought ice cream. We hurried back to the cave so we wouldn't miss the sunset.

The sunsets in Santorini are super famous and are recognized as one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world. We found a good spot in our cave to watch and enjoy as the sun slowly went down into the sea. Once it was really dark, we finally decided to take a shower and go to bed.

The next morning, we woke up very early to get on our flight back to Athens. We were all bummed to leave, however we were so happy to have had such a great and wonderful experience in the beautiful island of Santorini.
